Over 50 years in Victoria Park
In 2019 the John Hughes Group celebrated 50 years of trading in the car industry in Western Australia. An iconic WA business, we now employ about 450 staff, selling eight of the world’s leading new car brands and thousands of pre-owned vehicles each year. John Hughes is passionate about customer service, with all team members reinforcing the company philosophy that “We are a friendly and efficient company trading with integrity and determined to give our customers the very best of service.”
The journey began in 1969 with Mr Hughes purchasing a vacant service station in Victoria Park. This 196 Albany Highway site became the location of his first business, Paramotors. Within a few years, this became one of the leading used car businesses in WA. In 1980 Mr Hughes took over a Mitsubishi franchise from the Skipper Bailey Motor Company, giving him his first new car franchise, and has been one of the top three selling Mitsubishi dealers in Australia ever since.
In 1986 along with Alan Bond, Mr Hughes helped to bring the first Hyundai vehicles into Australia. John Hughes Hyundai because the world’s top selling Hyundai dealership for eight consecutive years. Further expansions followed including adding Volkswagen, Ford, Kia and Jeep into the new franchise fold. In 2018 the Group backed the value and quality of Chinese car manufacturers, becoming WA’s first MG dealership and opening an LDV showroom.
On March 29th 2019, Mr Hughes’ decorated career and business was celebrated once again when he became the first inductee into the Town of Victoria Park’s Business Hall of Fame. Showing outstanding courage and dedication, the John Hughes Group has weathered many economic environments, changes to every facet of a business and proudly stands together 50 year on.
