Top Australian race tracks to rev your engines on

September, 2012

There are still a few months left in 2012, and if our post earlier this year on the best Australian car racing events left you feeling all inspired to get in on the action yourself, here’s our pick of some of the best race tracks, speedways and circuits around Australia.

Symmons Plains Raceway – Tasmania

2.4km long and located 30kms south of Launceston, Symmons Valley Raceway is Tasmania’s main race course. Opened in 1960, the track is known for its super tight hairpin corner, a just a few of the famous names to have driven around the track include Bob Jane, Norm Beechey, Peter Brock, Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes, with the late Peter Brock holding the record for the highest number of wins at the track (five).

Lakeside International Raceway – Ipswich, QLD

This raceway has a charming history – built by volunteers in the 1960s, it is widely considered to be the “spiritual” heart of motorsports in Queensland. The raceway did have a brief hiatus when it was closed between 2001 and 2008, but rest assured it’s back with a vengeance after several lobby groups and activists campaigned for years to have it reopened! It’s actually part of a larger raceway complex, so there are plenty of tracks to choose from.

Hidden Valley Raceway – Darwin, NT.

Famous for its extremely high speeds, Hidden Valley Raceway isn’t for the faint-hearted.  Home to V8 Supercar races since 1998, the track is 2.87km of pure adrenaline. If you prefer to take it a little easier, however, there’s even a go-kart circuit there if you’re keen for some more light-hearted fun.

Barbagallo Raceway, Wanneroo, WA

50kms north of Perth, Barbagallo Raceway in WA is (naturally) one of our favourites. Short and sweet at just 1.7 km long, the raceway is home to one round of the all-important V8 Supercars Championship every year. With a smooth, grippy surface and plenty of straight stretches, this one’s great for high speeds as well.
